8.5.2021 An Outing On Mothers' Day

The Food Lovers had an outing on Mothers' Day. As usual, M.Y. planned an interesting itinerary for the day's outing to the mainland.

1st stop was at Permatang Tinggi to buy (uncooked) 'Chai Kueh'. A variety of chai kuehs are available.

A platter of four types of chai kuehs (steamed vegetable dumplings) is on sale. The all-time favorite, stir-fried jicama or locally known as mengkuang char, sweet yam or orr nee, pumpkin fried with dried shrimp, and the traditional chives or koo chai. We pre-ordered the mengkuang, sweet yam, and pumpkin ones as we are all not much of chive-eaters although they are her best sellers. This traditional local delicacy is very popular, especially among the teochews and hakkas but it is gaining a following from the young and old alike as they are simply irresistible served with the chili sauce dip that goes with this local snack. The chef for these delish steamed vegetable dumplings is of teochew ascend and speaks with a thick accent. As beautiful as her chai kuehs, Mdm Ng has been making these traditional snacks for the past 30 years.

It is recommended that pre-orders be made or be at the stall before 11.00 a.m. to avoid disappointment.

There was another stall in front,  called San Hokkien Mee which was selling very well.

2nd stop was at Hup Hoe Biscuit in Simpang Ampat to buy 'Roti Tiao'. We explored the shop front and they are selling more than a hundred types of biscuits. We asked staff and were told that this is the 3rd generation running the business.

3rd stop was to pick up Pearly and Boon Soon and then we proceed for lunch at Tai Mah Restaurant at Sungai Jawi.
